Project Background
Reef Rescue is a key
component of the Australian Government's $2 billion Caring for
our Country initiative.
The initiative's aim is to
restore the health of Australia's environment and improve land
management practices. It represents a new, coordinated
approach to environmental management in Australia that is built
on transparent and consistent national targets.
It is truly separate to
the Queensland Government's proposed Reef Regulation.
Queensland farmers,
agricultural, tourism, fishing and aquaculture industries,
Indigenous communities, conservation groups, research
organisations and most importantly, the Great Barrier Reef, will
benefit from Reef Rescue's investment of $200 million over five
years in actions that protect one of the world's great natural
wonders.
The majority of the $200
million funding is for on-ground incentives for sustainable farm
practices (73% or $146 million over five years), reef
partnerships (6% or $12 million over five years), land and sea
indigenous partnerships (5% or $10 million over five years),
research and development (5% or $10 million over five years),
and monitoring and reporting for an annual Great Barrier Reef
water quality report card (11% or $22 million over five years).
Reef Plan
2009
is the agreed approach by government and scientists to protect
the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area. There is a

Initiative and the Queensland Government Reef Protection
Amendment Act and other regulations to the overarching Reef Plan
2009. All these processes are working towards the Year 2013
targets which are:
